Mountain Leader Training Course 1 & 2 BOS / Mountaineering Ireland (ML1 & ML2) Mountain Leader (ML) training is for those who wish to lead others in the mountains, hills, and moorlands of Ireland and the UK, in summer conditions. It is designed to promote the safe enjoyment of the mountains and provides instruction in the skills required for those who wish to lead groups. Mountain Leader training is usually split into two blocks but can also be completed in one week long block. Rock climbing, use of the rope, and leading groups in winter conditions are not covered by the ML. Is it for you? The ML training scheme is for hill walkers who wish to lead others in the mountains. The course provides all the basic skills required to lead groups in the mountains of Ireland and the UK in Summer conditions. Topics covered include route planning, equipment, map-reading, navigation techniques, movement on steep ground, emergency rope work, leadership skills and coping with emergencies. Typically the training is divided into two blocks - Mountain Leader 1 (ML1) and Mountain Leader 2 (ML2), run over a two day for ML1 and 3 days for ML2 and comprise of a mixture of indoor informal lectures/discussions and outdoor practical sessions.  After this there is an optional Assessment run by BOS which takes place over 3 full days in the mountains Prior to registering for training you must meet the following criteria: •Be at least 20 years old (younger candidates can go through training and assessment but will not be granted their Award until they are 20) •Be a current member of Mountaineering Ireland •Have passed their Mountain Skills Assessment •Have a current first aid qualification relevant to the mountain environment •Have logged at least 20 quality hillwalking days in suitable terrain What we Cover? Mountain Leader training is divided into 2 blocks, ML1 and ML2. ML1: This course includes Navigation and builds on the skills learnt in Mountain Skills. We look at Weather, Route and trip planning, micro navigation, emergency rope work and Leadership skills ML2: This course builds on ML1 and covers further emergency rope work, river crossings, camp craft and expedition planning as well as a practical overnight expedition.
